Perinatal Exposure Prevention Project (PEPP)

The Perinatal Exposure Prevention Project is the only program specifically designed to address the special needs of substance-using pregnant women.

As an advocate for both mother and baby, PEPP has worked diligently at identifying barriers and gaps in the existing service delivery systems. Through individual case work, women receive services from a variety of treatment and education programs throughout the community to provide a healthier lifestle for themselves and their families.

In 1993, the Alcohol & Addictions Resource Center coordinated a group of community professionals to participate in the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Community Team Training Institute in Washington, D.C. Substance use during pregnancy had been a problem in the St. Joseph County community for many years, but those issues pertaining to perinatal substance use were brought into focus at that time. AARC led the way with the introduction of the Perinatal Exposure Prevention Project (PEPP), implementing services to provide education, outreach and support to women who are at risk or already using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs during pregnancy.

MISSION:

Through community cooperation, support and collaboration, PEPP's mission is to promote healthy birth outcomes and healthy lifestyles for women in relation to alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. PEPP targets women of childbearing age with prevention, education and outreach services to reduce and/or eliminate the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs during pregnancy. For those women who are using, or at risk of using substances, PEPP provides outreach services, continued education, support and referrals to appropriate services.

SERVICES:

Professional education and community presentation on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and pregnancy.

Resource Room with information specific to substance use and pregnancy for the community and outreach clients.

Outreach services to educate and link women to treatment and other community resources.

Outreach support to women in treatment and recovery for continued healthier lifestyle choices.
